French Conversation – Real-life Example 5 From France – Part 1

Continuing the case studies of real-life French conversations, today I want to look at another sample conversation from France. If you have read the post how to use these real-life examples, you should do so first.

Like all our case studies, this one is divided into two parts. Part 1 contains the recording, the transcription and the translation. The next blog post, Part 2, contains some general comments on what to listen for, detailed technical commentary and some suggestions on how to incorporate this material into your personal speaking style.

This French Conversation

Here we have an excellent example of unscripted and lively dialogues in contemporary French between two youngish male acquaintances. It contains many examples of all the features of French conversation that I have discussed in various posts. I’ll revisit many of these features in the technical commentary in the next post.

The two speakers are Lorenzo, on the left, and Sébastien, on the right. Sébastien has a cold, I think, but his speech is very clear. Lorenzo is a professional voice trainer and Sébastien is a marketing expert who specializes in product launches under the brand name Le lancement orchestré. They are discussing how Lorenzo came to use Sébastien’s services in his voice coaching business.

How to use this example

The rate of speaking here is quite fast. I suggest you listen to the recording in small doses with the transcript. If necessary, look at the translation. Then listen to the excerpt a few more times until you can really understand everything. Part 2 should give you more insight into how the language works.

This excerpt ends at 5:20 of the original recording.

– Bonjour Lorenzo.
– T’as pris (14) ton savoir, ton (15) expérience, tu l’as packagée. (16)
– Exactement. (17)
– Dis-moi

Translation

The translation may seem a bit awkward at times because I have deliberately tried to keep some of the original French phrasing where I would have used something more idiomatic in English.

– Hi Lorenzo.
– Hi Sébastien.
– The very first question I’d like to ask you, since you are a professional in the field of voice-over, and voice work for radio and television…
– Ya.
– The first question I want to ask you is why this move to selling your products over the Internet and then to selling with the orchestrated product launches?
– Well, first of all, I was a broadcaster, a voice-over artist, a voice actor but I quickly became a media technique coach. I’ve trained radio and tv performers…ah,.. voice-over, right here in this studio. Media personalities such as … in the back here. For example, Cyrille Lignac et many media personalities. Then, a few years ago I said to myself: the future is not necessarily in face to face training but on the Internet. If I want to train the maximum number of people in the entire world and share my technique, my method, my secrets, I have to get on the Internet. So I created an online method. So I started to create a…a course on a platform…ah..called Maxi-Voice and …and then I…I said to myself I’m going to sell my product on the Internet because that’s where things are happening.
– You took your knowledge, your experience, and you packaged it.
– Exactly.
– That you could sell in addition to your coaching services.
– Exactly.
– O.K.
– So above all…because it…face to face coaching is expensive…you know when you are a consultant how much it is expensive when people come to see you but it is expensive…not everybody can afford it so I said to myself if I did something on the Internet I can automate my techniques, I’ll be able to create en interactive environment because with the Internet whether it’s with Skype or by sending audio or video files you can reduce the costs and I developed an economical online training program that allows everybody to acquire today the professional skills of the media professionals that were previously limited to an elite and today are available for everybody on the Internet. So, when I got on to the Internet I created my website like everybody else by hook and by crook, as we say.
– (laughter)
– (rires)
– So, I said to myself that people will come to me, they’ll come. Hi there, I’m over here. Hello.
– I’ve developed this awesome product and I started to realize that Google existed, among other things and that there was social media.
– Because in the beginning, you develop your Internet site like a little store.
– There you go.
– And you wait…for people to come.
– You tell all your friends about it and everybody comes and nobody buys.
– And then it’s like in western movies.
– That’s it.
– You can see the bale of hay rolling.
– Exactly
– (sound effects)
– Hi John
– So, how did you fix the problem?
– Well, above all …I said to myself that there must be…there are things that I don’t know. Internet marketing is a skill. It’s a skill. There are specialists. There are experts. We have lots of people on the Internet, we have people, knowledge. Then, on the one hand, I ran into your videos. And that’s really important…an orchestrated launch that you had done some time ago…some months ago since all this happened a year ago. And then I was really bowled over. Ya, I was bowled over because I said to myself here’s this guy with these dreadlocks on the video making sense, talking directly to you, showing these videos, and takes you off into a world that you may know nothing about, and above all he says that you you can sell any product on the Internet without spending a fortune. It really excited me because when you start up your business you usually don’t have a lot of money for.
– Capital
– Capital, exactly. That’s it, this is what frightens everybody finally when you start up your thing. So, I said, fine, what do we have to do…so..it’s true…we had to write copy, we had to …emails, all that…it’s a professional job…it’s not my field initially. I know how to communicate, I know how to use my voice, I know how to express myself, I know how to captivate audiences but writing, creating a marketing stratedy, I had no clue. So, that’s how I found out about the orchestrated launches.
– So, finally, it was with the intention of selling over the Internet while searching for the best strategy that you decided to go with the orchestrated launch.
– Exactly. I decided to try the orchestrated launch method. So I met people who helped me, who showed me what to do, with videos clips to attract people to my …squeeze page.. I learned the jargon, the key words – a squeeze page – to make people want to know who you are because when you arrive on the Net, you’re perhaps well known in the world of media but in the world of business you’re not necessarily well known.. So, starting with making yourself known, reassure people, that was important, reassure…on your expertise. Then take them…give them, reveal to them secrets that they will never learn elsewhere. So I made some video right here, as a matter of fact, in this studio with some of my students to show them that with a few techniques it is possible to to make progress, to improve one’s vocal techniques, expressive techniques, how to grab attention in front of a camer. How to…how to sell, convince, simply with some basic techniques and so I made use of some affiliates, affiliates, great people, that is..that’s..
– Wait a minute, before
– Tell me
